Asparagus Shrimp

Stirfried Asparagus and Shrimps with some slices of carrots.

This is a simple dish to cook at home but I know some people do not like to eat asparagus because of the smell when they go to the washroom after a few hours. What about you? Does the smell stop you from eating asparagus?

Japanese Pork Ginger Rice

Two of us went for a meal at Menya Musashi, One Utama again. This time we did not share one set meal because there were many people there and it did not feel nice to be ordering one set meal only so we ordered one meal and one set meal and after finishing the food, both of us were very full.

Shogayaki Gohan - MYR10 - Japanese Pork Belly Ginger Rice - to me, the taste is quite similar to Chinese Pork Belly Salted Fish Ginger Rice.

Ramen Kuro Karaage Set Meal - MYR35 - consists of one glass of green tea, a big bowl of ramen, a bowl of salad and fried chicken (as shown in photo below). The egg is not included in the set meal and is added to the meal at the cost of RM2.

Karaage - Japanese Fried Chicken - this dish is included in the set meal we ordered.

A photo to show the size of the bowl of Pork Ginger Rice as compared to the bowl of salad. After 10% service charge and 6% gov. tax the bill came up to MYR54.50 for a very filling lunch.

Do you like to eat these fresh mangoes?

Or do you prefer to eat mangoes with sweet glutinous rice in coconut milk (Thai dessert)?

See Ham Chow Fun

My mother used to buy See Ham Chow Fun (Stir Fried Yellow Noodle with Blood Cockles) for me to eat from the morning market when I was young. It has been a while since I last eat this dish as usually I will eat Char Kway Teow (Stir Fried Flat Rice Noodle) instead.

See Ham Chow Fun RM5. Can't really see the blood cockles in this photo. Can only see the beansprout and shrimps.

I know many people do not eat offal (the internal organs of animals such as kidney and liver that are used for food). My friend likes to frequent a certain stall that sells pork noodle mainly because they offer pork kidney.

I eat pork livers but I don't eat pork kidneys and have never even tried to eat one. I just don't dare. Do you like to eat pork kidneys?

Can you spot the piece of pork kidney in the bowl of noodle above?

Grand Harbour

After our initial visit in January, we finally ate at Grand Harbour restaurant again.

Beef Brisket Noodle - MYR13.80 - some of the pieces of beef were quite tough.

Deep Fried Yam Dumpling (Wu Kok) - MYR6.30 - very crispy but oily as expected.

Close up shot - I can't really tell what ingredients are in the fillings just by looking at it but from the taste of it, I know there are yam, chinese mushrooms, and minced meat in the fillings.

I must order this at every place that serves glutinous rice - MYR6.30 - I like this as the glutinous rice is soft but not too soft and it has the right balance of saltiness and sweetness. There is a piece of chicken meat, a slice of chinese mushroom and a piece of pork meat on top.

We ordered steamed beef ball again - MYR7.30 - tender but as I mentioned before, the beef taste is not strong enough for me.

Close up cross section shot - as can be seen, there are pieces of water chestnut and spring onions within the minced beef meat ball to provide some crunchiness to it.

Steamed fish meat balls - MYR 6.80 - soft but "bouncy"

Deep Fried Glutinous Chicken Dumpling - MYR6.30 - we waited quite some time for this and it was served piping hot so I think it came directly from the cooking oil to our table.

Close up cross section - as can be seen from the photo, there are very little fillings inside but the glutinous rice flour ball is chewy and taste quite good - sweet and savoury.

Steamed shrimp and green peas dumpling - MYR6.80 - passable. We also ordered a pot of tea for two @ MYR3 per pax. Total bill came up to MYR69.15 inclusive of 10% service charge and 6% gov. tax.

Black egg

Do you like to eat century egg (皮蛋)? I like to eat them with pickled ginger or pickled onions or in congee. I know there are reports saying they are not good for health so I am eating them once in a blue moon.

Preserved egg and pickled ginger - MYR4.00 - special teatime price at Ying Ker Lou.

Almond Thins

Jules Destrooper - Almond Thins - MYR13.90 (100g) - made in Belgium

The packet inside the box

There are 4 compartments containing around 6 almond thins each

Almond Thins - very milky and sweet, crunchy too but need to eat them fast once the pack is opened else they lose their crunchiness.

Ba Chang

After reading Small Kucing's blog sometime ago about ba chang (Hokkien word meaning glutinous rice dumpling with meat), I suddenly feel like eating them so I bought one from the morning market today.

Savoury glutinous rice dumpling - MYR5

After removing the bamboo leaves

The dumpling has been wrapped tightly and cooked for a long time so it was diffficult to separate the glutionous rice from the other ingredients. This savoury dumpling has black eyed beans instead of mung beans. I like to eat both beans but I have not seen a dumpling with both type of beans in it.

There is quite a fair bit of salted egg yolk here. Other ingredients inside are pork meat, chinese mushrooms, and chestnuts.

Can you guess what this is? I have to remove all these carefully with my chopsticks because I don't like to eat these and most of them have kind of melted into the glutinous rice. After eating one dumpling, I was very full as it was quite big and the glutinous rice was very filling.

Kaisen Nabe Zen

We went to Kura Japanese restaurant again for its set lunch. Even though the set lunch menu only lists a choice of saba or sanma for its grilled fish set lunch, the waitress told us that salmon is available too so we ordered salmon shioyaki this time.

Salmon grilled lightly with salt set lunch (includes potatoes salad, pickled vege, chawan mushi, rice, miso soup, fruits) for only MYR23. To me, this is the best way to eat salmon - lightly grilled with salt with no heavy tasting sauce.

Seafood nabe set lunch (includes chawan mushi, fruits, rice, pototoes salad) for only MYR33. The seafood hotpot contains a lot of food for one person - chinese cabbage, prawns, pieces of salmon, tofu, lettuce, onions, squid rings and the soup is very tasty and not salty at all.

Hot green tea foc. Total Bill: MYR64.95 (inclusive of 10% service charge and 6% gov. tax).

Different style

This bowl of pan mee has quite different offerings in it. It has pork meat balls, vege, minced pork meat, deep fried bean curd sheets and best of all, it only costs MYR5.

Tuesday, May 20, 2014

We ordered from the "Happy Single Sets" menu again at Esquire Kitchen for dinner. This time as I was not that hungry, we just ordered one set to share and add on an item at a discounted price.

Pork chop noodles with herbal tea set - MYR11.90

Add on: Fried dumplings (Wotip - 锅贴) for MYR6. 锅贴 means pot sticker literally since when the dumplings were grilled, their bottom sticks stuck to the pan.

When we were eating at Belanga restaurant, we ordered a hot drink called Bandrek (MYR7.90). It does not contain any sugar so we were given sachets of sugar to add to the drink to get the sweetness that we like. We only used 1 sachet.

We did not know what drink it is. The description on the menu says: drink with cinnamon, ginger and peppermint. It sounds good to us so we ordered it and later we found out this drink is to warm up our bodies. If you like cinnamon taste, you will like this drink and fortunately we like the taste of cinnamon.

A glass of Bandrek

After finishing the drink, we can see the peppermint leaves, strips of ginger and a stick of cinnamon (kayu manis).

Nasi Goreng Selasih

The first time we ordered Nasi Goreng Selasih (Fried Rice with Thai Basil/Sweet Basil) MYR18.9 at Belanga and requested for the chicken wings that were served to be swapped with other parts of the chicken, we were told it was not possible to do so although we could see that there were other chicken parts  available in the trays behind the serving counter.

This time we ordered Nasi Goreng Selasih again and did not make any special request. To our surprise, we were given a piece of chicken thigh with drumstick instead of chicken wings. This makes us wonder why our request was turned down last time but there's no point asking now since they won't remember our previous visit.

Fried Rice with Thai Basil/Sweet Basil - MYR18.9 - a balanced meal with raw vegetables, chicken meat, rice and it is tasty too.

Nasi Tumpang

One of my favourite food at Belanga restaurant is Nasi Tumpang. There is a choice of fish curry (MYR8.90) or prawn curry (MYR9.9) and I often select the fish curry nasi tumpang.

Nasi Tumpang - Rice wrapped into a cone shape using banana leaf.

The rice is layered alternately with kerisik (toasted grated coconut), fish curry with a small piece of fish, omelette and sambal (a spicy condiment). Very tasty because I like to eat the compressed rice which is quite soft.

Century Egg Congee

I love to eat century eggs but I don't eat them that often. Usually I eat them with congee.

This bowl of century egg congee costs MYR7.50

Compared to the sweet potatoes congee, this rice porridge is considered Cantonese style as the grains of rice can't be seen clearly anymore and the congee is more sticky.

Salmon Maki

Hong Cha Restaurant in OUG is famous for its pork noodles with unlimited deep fried pork lard. Just look at the photo below to see the juicy pork lard. Actually I don't eat pork lard so when I forget to ask them to omit the pork lard, I will just leave them uneaten which seems to be such a waste for people who likes to eat them.

Signature Pork Noodle (MYR7) small portion

We had this Signature Pork Noodle (MYR7) small portion during another visit and the vegetable served was different from the above bowl.

They also serve sushi and tempura after 6pm and here I have ordered a plate of salmon maki - MYR5 for 6 small pieces, comes with special Japanese soy sauce and wasabi. Good when you feel like eating a tiny portion of rice and not noodles.

Fresh Fish Head Mee Hoon

We went to "Home Made Fish Head Noodle" restaurant for lunch again as my mother wanted to eat fish head mee hoon.

This time she ordered Fresh Fish Head Mee Hoon - MYR11.50 and she liked it. The fish was not deep fried so it was not oily.

My spouse who can't take milk ordered Fried Dolly Fish Mee Hoon without milk - MYR12.50 and as can be seen from the photo, the soup is clear and not milky. The fish comes in slices with no bones.

The basic Fried Fish Head Mee Hoon - MYR11.50 - the soup is milky.

I ordered sliced fish fried rice (MYR10.80) as I am not very fond of eating fish head noodle but I only ate half of the rice and shared the other half with my companions. Total bill came up to MYR50.95 after 10% service charge only. No gov. tax. charged.

Saw this special menu that offers set meals from 2.30pm to 6.30pm
